Spook Street by Mick Herron. If John le Carre wrote a light spy thriller with lashings of black humour this is what you'd get. An easy read and most enjoyable.

After that it was John Le Carres' The Niight Manager. My favourite Le Carre so far, it is addled with his deeply felt cynicism about the intelligence services and their political masters.

Time for something light now so I've just started on Wilt by Tom Sharpe.

Have you read 'The Throwback' by TS, longk? The most anarchic book he ever wrote, IMO. Priceless!

Anything by Tom Sharpe is a good option :)

I've just finished the rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch. Mildly amusing throughout if you like silliness and a bit of whimsy.

Back to the sea now and 'Ramage' by Dudley Pope

In The Garden Of Beasts by Erik Larson. The true story of the American ambassador to Nazi Germany during the 1930s. Makes grim reading as the mild mannered ambassador struggles against vested interests to alert the US President and other nations to Hitler's megalomania.

Having read all the "Frost" books by R D Wingfield I am now reading the prequels written by other authors Differently written but just as enjoyable.

How do the books compare to the David Jason TV programmes?

Finished that, I liked the story but not the author's style. I can live with American spellings but using words like 'gotten' and 'totalled' annoyed me, just seems sloppy and spoilt it for me.

Better, in that there is more detail and Frost is a bit bawdier than on TV. I see the TV characters in my mind when reading. Mind you, in the books, Stanley Mullett has a moustache whereas on TV Norman Mullett does not!
