Got the shock of my life at dinner time today, I went out in to the garden to top the bird feeders up and perched on one of our fence posts was a Buzzard!!!!, needless to say as soon as it saw me it was off.

We're not far from open fields/countryside and I quite often see them circling round high up in the sky, usually being mobbed by crows etc, but for one to land on a fence post next to a public footpath - amazing :dbgrtmb:

        Update.....

Well the weather is gradually getting colder again and yesterday we had some more 'new' visitors for our garden; 5 Siskins feeding on the table and seed feeder, a most welcome sighting, couldn't get close enough for a photo though, they were very shy :)

Everyone gets fieldfares.. the only time I've ever seen a Fieldfare is in 2010.. I'm convinced these birds are only adapted to cold!

In my garden; Robins, Woodpigeons, Magpies, Blue Tits, Coal Tits, Starlings, Goldfinches, and Sparrows.

We have magpies(too many), wood pigeons, sparrows, robins, bluetits, great tits, long tailed tits (a gang of 7or8 that visit a couple of times a day) blackbirds, think ones a foreigner as he's black like a male but without the bright yellow beak  quite tame too he never flies off when I go out just tells me off very loudly, also yesterday our first bullfinch :dancy: , and yes the flippin heron who I chase away from the pond several times in a morning.
The bird feeders quite near the kitchen and a couple of days ago the local sparrowhawk swooped in to try and grab one of the bluetits but luckily it was too fast and managed to get to the nearby rosebush in time :hate-shocked:

This morning, a male siskin was on the Niger seed feeder. What an amazing yellow waistcoat he had on !! Hope he comes back with the bloomin' missus tomorrow, I'll try and get a piccie,

They are indeed Stephen, they arrive from Scandinavia around November time as our Country turns colder and theirs turns a bit too cold to search for food. Usually they stay in the open countryside, farmfields and orchards etc but when we get bad weather, particularly snow they are known to move into built up areas and gardens in search of food, they love berries and fallen apples in particular. Come March time they will be gone once more until next winter.

Although there is a small breeding population said to reside in the far north of Scotland :)

One of the returning Siskins , a lone male which stayed filling himself for ten minutes.

Well after having a Niger Seed feeder up for about a year now (previously without success) we have finally persuaded two of the local Goldfinches to become regular daily visitors instead of fleeting visits once in a blue moon.

They now come and feed several times every day and I'm having to fill the feeder every 2-3 days :)

The Goldfinches ignored the one we put up in Weymouth but here they are at all day every day!
The Chiffchaff was back again briefly plus two Robins, feeing peacefully together so presumbly a pair and our very elusive Wren paid a brief visit too..

Had 3 pairs of siskins today - the word must be getting around, and 1 long tailed tit on its own. I will try and get piccies tomorrow,

Only just stumbled onto this thread.... so I have to take us back to December ...

Every winter, in addition to the normal garden birds, we get invaded by flocks of redwings and field fares. One December they descended on our firethorn in earnest and stripped the berries in 4 days!!
                image.jpg

We also have a pair (or maybe different pair) of blackcaps which spend their winter with us. image.jpg

Photos were taken from our kitchen window.

Excellent shots HsuH:blue thumb:, no Blackcaps here unfortunately, from what I have read, the ones wintering here are from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe and are not the same ones that breed here in the summer.
