[IMG] I am thinking of changing my digital camera this year & was wondering what digital camera you would recommend.. I have a Canon Powershot. A70 at the moment.. [IMG]
I have a couple of requirements....

    1. Fits into a pocket.
    2. Take batteries not a dedicated power pack.
    3. No dedicated flash cards or memory chips.
    4, Good zoom facillity.
    5. Crisp clear shots...

I would like 2 & 3 then you can get what you need virtually anywhere......

Can't recommend one except to say I have a Kodak EasyShare 360..5.0mp, and having shown it to others who know their way around a digi, they have bought one too. [IMG]

YES MF I am thinking of doing same. my better half subscribes to "Martins money week" and there was this 5 pixel camera for £49 going on a deal that had escaped notice. I nearly bought it, with hind site I was mad not to!

    Marley..
    Regarding your requirements 2 & 3.

Batteries - I paid £3.50 for an additional battery pack for my Nikon 7900 (vest pocket size)which given the cost of throw-away cells and the associated environmental costs seems pretty good. One battery pack allows me to take something approaching 80+ pics even in a cold climate.

Can't see how you'll manage to take many pics without a flash card or without substantial inbuilt memory. Most digi-cams are now being supplied with very small memory cards and unless you are happy to settle for a dozen pics before downloading, you'll need additional storage capacity. Memory cards have dropped in price quite significantly over the last 18 months and by shopping around you should find one that will allow you to snap away without concern about memory space. (I'm using a 1 Gb card in my 7900 which gives over 200 pics or a bit less if I take movies)
When looking at cameras that offer "Easy print" / Easy Anything, it might be worthwhile considering if you really need those extra "easy" options. With a half decent printer and image editing software anyone can produce decent prints or web-photos.

Give some thought to buying s/h rather than new. You'll get much more for your money. My three year old £600 (Nikon 5700) camera is now worth around £200 s/h!!

I have a Fuji S5500 - standard rechargable batteries x 4, 10x optical zoom, 2272x1704 px but whilst it fits in my anorak pocket (just) it could hardly be called pocket size - but I like it.

Well going by the pics you've posted Nick your "pointing and pressing" is pretty impressive. You've got the eye for a photo and regardless of camera or technology, that's the most important element in a picture!

[IMG] Hi Dave, I have thought of buying 2nd hand, just depends what is on offer.. As regards 2 & 3, I was thinking AAs as that is what the Canon has. I do of course use re-chargables, but sometimes I have been caught out a few times, but luckily you can dive in almost anywhere & buy AAs. It can be tricky to get hold of the dedicated ones sometimes... As for the flash cards, as I have at least 4 256mb cards that fit Canon & several other makes. Would rather use that type than say the Sony one, that way can have both cameras on the go with no problems of different equipment. I have found with the batteries I get at least one flash cards worth of photos about 180 photos. Obviously much less if using movie mode.. I have some pretty good editing software with Photoshop, PhotoImpressions & Paintshop, but I just want that little bit more to start with. I want to increase from 3.2mp that the Canon has, to something a little better.... ;) Want that little bit crisper picture.... [IMG]

Nearly the ame as Paladin, I have a Kodak 4460 and juior has a Kodak 3330 both take excellent pics but after having a Pentax SLR with tele's and zooms, the digital's zoom is a little restrictive. [IMG]

[IMG] ~I know what you mean Strongy, about the digitals zooms being a little restrictive & I do miss that. You can only to so much in the editing suites before the photos pixelate. This is why I want something a little better....

Excuse me for butting in - but there is a difference between optical zoom and digital zoom. One of the reasons I got the Fugi was its 10x optical zoom. Don't use the digital zoom as it degrades the picture.

By the way MF by rechargable I meant the rechargable AA size - not camera specific battery like a mobile phone - sorry that wasn't clear. I keep some in my camera and carry a spare set - never needed to use them yet.

Fran is right. Digital zoom is useless and the same as enlarging a photo too much on your computer. You just get blotchy pixels. Go for the camera with the best optical zoom that you can afford. I too always used an SLR 35mm film camera with various zoom and macro lens. A digital compact camera can't do what it did - but its a lot lighter to carry around. One day when I win the lottery I'll buy a digital SLR. In the mean time, I'm very happy with my Nikom Coolpix and all my photos on Gardeners Corner were taken with it.

[IMG] Well you seem to take very nice photos with the cool pix Hornbeam.. It seems my camara is not taking the crisp photos it used to. That's why I want to change... [IMG]
Thanks Fran, for the input on the zoom.. I have been looking at your camera & am a little taken by it. Like the AA batteries, but does it fit in your pocket.???? Honestly mind....! :D This is my big question.........
