This has been reappearing in our garden for seveal years now but we have no idea what it is. The clump is about 50-60 cm across, it is under some shrubs so it does like it shady. The leaves are shiney and the plant is only about 15 cm tall.

It looks a bit like Asarum europeum.

Does it have one flower? The only kidney shaped leaf i can find with a shiney leathery surface is Asarabacca.(Birthwort family)Does it smell peppery?

Thanks both Palustris and Elaine, that was a quick ID!

It does have a bit of a smell but I'm not sure if it is really peppery. I found a few little things that looked like weeny apples, obviously the flowers or seed pods, that were under the leaves and so not to be seen unless you moved the leaves.

I then googled both names and it also goes under the name of Wild Ginger, Hazelwort and Wild Nard.
