Hello What is this weed/plant and how do we stop it? Very fast growing and no matter what we try it keeps coming back .
Looks like Tussilago farfara....coltsfoot. Coltsfoot: a potential invasive species? | The Michigan Nature Guy’s Blog Tussilago - Wikipedia
Just rechecked your pics. Sorry too hasty last time! Edges of the leaves are finely toothed. So not Tussilago but Petasites fragrans...Winter heliotrope. It has flower in winter Nov -March...then the leaves appear. Another invasive thug. petasites fragrans - Google Search Petasites fragrans - Wikipedia
Also, in your second picture, you have strawberry weed. Another pernicious weed that can spread like mad. It's difficult to remove if you don't know how. Once established it has a long taproot and you need to get underneath it. If you can't dig down then make sure that when you dig a little bit you grab the root below a small nodule that is just a little way beneath the surface. Otherwise it snaps off at that nodule and leaves the whole root. Grip the root firmly beneath the nodule and pull, gently, upwards. You can quite often get most or all of it that way. Pulling sharply will just break it.
shiney.....Just to clarify. Weed at bottom is Potentilla repens...common name creeping cinquefoil. Not to be confused with Fragaria.....edible strawberry. Potentilla reptans - Google Search Fragaria leaves - Google Search
Thanks @Silver surfer Out of interest, is strawberry weed the same as wild strawberry as we seem to get both in our garden? The strawberry weed doesn't appear to flower (but I seem to remember some may have had small yellow flowers), is very invasive and extremely difficult to remove. Whereas the wild strawberries, which we also have, are not quite as rampant and are easy to remove as they seem to have their roots close to the surface. The strawberry weed roots can easily get to be 12" long.
Hi shiney...this is where common names can lead to confusion. I have never heard of Strawberry weed. Th wild strawberry is Fragaria vescu.....it has small white flowers, the fruits are delicious...note the leaves are in 3's. Fragaria vesca - Google Search Now the earlier weedy plant Potentilla repens has a leaf like your palm with 5 fingers....yellow flowers . No edible berries. Both plants spread by runners which root at a leaf node.. One I consider to be a pesky weed...the strawberry I love...you decide if you want to weed it out. Hope this helps.
It's yet another common name for Creeping Cinquefoil, but the existence of a strain of Cannabis of the same name that's popular with those who grow their own means that any attempt at Googling it will only produce hundreds of hits from the latter. Creeping cinquefoil is a real nuisance as it will creep under weed supressant membrane and out the other side, and run along raised bed edging boards out of sight until it's too late and you discover it's spread long distances.
The description seems to fit. I filled a wheelie bin with it the other day Creeping cinquefoil/RHS Gardening
The term 'Strawberry Weed' may have originally been used for Potentilla Norvegica which has trifoliate basal leaves, but any weed that remotely resembles a strawberry has been called 'Strawberry Weed' by the local gardeners (many of whom aren't very numerate or observant).
