What is this -

    on our Deutzia? It is mainly on the bottom of the trunks and on the south-easterly facing side. How can we get rid of it?

    Looks like one of the mildew type of fungus. Fungicide if not organic, milk (1 part cream milk to 9 parts water) if organic.

    Kedi, certainly powdery mildew. Treat with a good fungicide. David.
