I've just been watching an article on the storms and floods, and heard about the sad death of a young woman who was killed by a falling Spruce tree last night. Now, whilst it is of course a tragedy and very sad - I was appalled to hear that the woman had been camping in a tent at under the tree! It was no secret that Exeter was one of the areas that was likely to get hit, heavily, by the stormy weather yesterday - so one has to wonder what possessed her to camp under a tree? I am of course assuming that the poor woman was doing so by choice, but apparently someone knew of her whereabouts when the tree came down, so you would hope that they would have taken her in or helped her find more suitable shelter for a night or two til the storm passed? And she is not alone either - it seems that every time we have severe weather, we hear about people getting themselves into trouble (or killed) simply because they haven't paid any attention to their own safety, and to be honest I get quite annoyed about it, as its not just themselves that they are putting at risk, but also those who have to try and save them.
Not heard the details of this news story but am assuming that she was a.Intrepid b.Homeless c.Living an alternative lifestyle People have varying attitudes to risk - you wouldn't catch me attempting Everest for example, but lots of people would describe me as a lily-livered cissy for not doing so. I did think twice about driving around unnecessarily on country roads this weekend, I must admit. There's always some poor unfortunate that gets a tree on them when the weather's stormy. No reason why I should encourage myself to be that person.
