What tree to buy? Help needed.

First of all I am new to gardening so no technical answers please!
A hazelnut tree just on the otherside of my fence has just been chopped down to my horror. It was lovely and gave us privacy from the street. We now have a large gap which we hate and want to plant another tree. I would not want the tree to grow more than 5 meters but with a nice wide canopy (similar to the size of the old hazelnut tree). It would be even better if it was evergreen, had some flowers or berries for interest and was happy in our very clay soil. I'd like to buy one quite big if possible for instant gap cover.
Any suggestions?
