I spent a long time yesterday evening watching a parasitic wasp. It was laying eggs on one of the logs in my attempt at a Victorian style "Stumpery" (I had a lot of old rotten wood in the garden and this was the easiest way to deal with it). 2024-05-17_16-02-17.jpg 2024-05-17_15-59-20_cropped.jpg 2024-05-17_16-03-46_cropped.jpg

A Swollen-thighed Beetle on buttercup. I never saw these in my garden until a few years ago, but now they have become common. Only the males have those impressive thighs.

@Alan Clark your large thigh beetle looks like the one I found in my pitcher plant - see my photo in the May photo competition. I had wondered what it was.

They are beautiful aren't they. They're also known as Thick-legged Flower Beetles which I like as it tells you where to look for them.
I didn't realise that only the males had the thighs so that's a new piece of information from @Alan Clark, thank you.

Well, not flying as such, but it did manage to flap its wings a bit to move away from the middle of the road - with some prompting. Isn’t it the cutest thing? Sparrow? :noidea:
