By the River Frome at Wareham there were a dozen Barnacle Geese (the ones with an all white face) amongst the larger, more brown Canada Geese, they are very rarely seen around here.

              A question for our experts.

It is extremely cold out this morning and our water bowls are frozen. I'm not feeling like going out there at the moment as I haven't been too well but I worry about the birds being able to drink. Are they able to get sufficient moisture from the frost on the plants?

Hi @shiney I would say no but then I am as far away from being an expert as you can get,but I do know that most birds have to put their heads back before they can swallow;)

If you have some running ditches then they're be drinking from them, even though we put water out for the birds you will still see them in the ditches, drinking and washing

Hi Shiney, putting something like a golf ball in the water bowls helps, they should be able to get their beaks in later in the day, you can also buy this

An attractive bird @hydrogardener, you have had some unusual birds lately (to us anyway) what other regulars do you get? our European Sparrows and Starlings or your Robin?
I have seen American Robins and Red Winged Blackbirds on a US trip some years ago.
Perhaps I will see a Mockingbird if we come over next year.

A juvenile Buzzard. They're virtually lining the roads around here at the moment waiting for roadkill or something to grab out the ditch, but worth carefully checking as occasionally it's a Hen Harrier.

Just to mention a few: tufted titmouse, canaries, blue birds, nuthatches, cardinals, juncos, grosbeaks, and an assortment of woodpeckers. We have a recent arrival from the south, the Carolina Wren. In the spring, we have robins, grackles, cow birds and humming birds. There are most likely many more that I missed. Carolina Wren is below. Oh, I forgot, sparrows.
