This popped up in my garden and is now well over five feet tall. I've been waiting for the flowers to open to decide whether to keep it or not, but now I'm getting a little impatient...

Sorry, I haven't got a clue Lorea, but I'll take a guess at some sort of thistle. :)

I'd be inclined to let the flowers open.

But a bit reluctant to let it seed.

I dug up a thistle Sheal a few weeks ago which was growing right next to it. The flower heads on this are really small in comparison to the size of the plant.

It's the shape of the buds that make me think it's of the thistle family. Like Pete I think I would be reluctant to let it seed, all those buds speak 'thug' to me.

Agree, it looks like a member of the thistle/daisy/composite/Asteraceae family. Don't let it seed unless you really like it! There are loads of them native to the US prairie and desert areas.

Difficult to id as the poster is in Northern Spain and there is a totally different flora there, than we have in Britain.

Decided not to risk it! It looked like the actual flowers were going to be fluffy see heads, so I pulled it up along with the two other specimens which have appeared. Thanks for the replies guys!
