As she sent my penstumum cuttings and now they are wonderful plants.

What should I do to protect them for the winter?

    Hi Kath

I planted some new penstemons last summer and they all made it through a pretty tough winter with no protection at all. However, the usual advice is to take a few cuttings and keep them under cover for the winter in case the parent plants don't make it.

It probably is too late to take cuttings but I suppose there's no harm in giving it a go!

Give your outdoor plants a nice mulch to help them through the winter.

Although my plants had to cope with freezing conditions last year and much more snow than we would normally get in the south, they are in a fairly dry spot in the garden. I have a suspicion that the thing which really does for them over the winter is being too wet. But that's just my theory!
