Dear friends, last autumn I bought a cheap bag of mixed botanical tulips from Wilko (I think). There were T. tarda, T. sylvestris, T. pulchella (I think - just 1) and these. The red is a wonderful soft yet fluorescent colour. It's not T. sprengeri - later and pointy petals - that isn't even showing buds yet. Is it eichleri? It's about the same height as tarda with very narrow foliage. I don't think it's fosteriana because I think that is a 'harder' red... Thanks for any help. TulipQuerySm.jpg

    He he..you can ask.
But I do not know my Tulips at all!
Not my favourite flower although I do like the dwarf ones.

So I cannot guarantee my answer...but with narrow leaves then it is possibly Tulipa linifolia.

Thanks @Silver surfer - the description of linifolia on the Pacific Bulb Society site says 'brilliant red' but I thought it was softer than that, which is why I dismissed it on first look. I guess the foliage does indicate it though. I'm very pleased with it - it's a lovely bulb to get in a cheap mix! And probably more perennial than the hybrid ones.

    Colour in pics does vary.
When I take blue flowers the colour is never the same as what I can see with my own eyes.

It even says that on Pacific Bulb Soc above....

Don't mention blue in photos being unrepresentative SS, sensitive subject! :heehee:

Planted some Ajuga reptans 'Catlin's Giant' recently, this is what it looks like in most of the photos online, a lovely, intense blue...

But what's the problem, I hear you say, yours look blue too, Nick.

IT'S THAT THEY LOOK BLOODY PURPLE IN REAL LIFE BUT PHOTOGRAPH BLUE! :wallbanging: :roflol:
