Is this a difficult herb to grow? I bought a purple sage the other week and within a week it was dead after re-potting! what on earth did I do wrong? it just went completely desiccated...

Difficult to say really, its not a difficult plant to grow.
    They dont like soggy roots.

Did you buy it at a garden centre?
If so you could take it back.

Sage is a really easy plant to grow and @pete is probably spot-on with his prognosis.

In some decent compost and in a herb planter with a hole in the bottom to let excess water out, sage should do well.

They become woody after a while and can overtake the pot and then will need a lot of pruning. You can plant them in the ground and they can become quite a bush indeed and often need a lot of pruning. Mine has gone crazy this year and has been pruned heavily a couple of times but looking at it, you wouldn't think so. The purple flowers look so nice at present, so will leave alone for a while.

I've only been able to grow Sage in open ground, anything in pots dies.

Maybe I got lucky with this one. It's been in the top of herb pot for about 5 years with Oregano and has always done ok. This year it has exploded and smothered pots around it several times even with some major pruning. Maybe a dose of Miracle Grow a few weeks ago did the trick. Gonna have to prune it back again once the flowers finish because it has gone insane again.
