I get this occasionally - sometimes more than others, sometimes not at all; I was de-seeding some maskotka earlier on today and the tomato juice/pulp was causing a stinging sensation on my skin. Admittedly, my skin might well not be at its happiest, as I had my hands in and out of water all day yesterday, but as mentioned this is not the first time that I have experienced this.

So, what would make tomato guts sting?

Don't tomatoes contain citric acid? It could be that.

Apparently they do, but only in very small amounts. Its a confusing one

Well they're definitely acidic - they always give the pan a good shine:)

Of all the foods that people can be allergic to, tomatoes are somewhere right near the top. Could be something to do with that. A localised allergic reaction perhaps?

Could be - funnily enough, there seems to be more than one thing getting to me in the allergy stakes; I'm getting hayfever symptoms on and off - irritated eyes, sneezing, runny nose, wheezy chest, the works - but these symptoms are completely intermittent, so its not a cold or anything.

I also seem to be overly sensitive to smells - the adhesive I used to fix the oven door has a whiff of vinegar to it (it excretes acetic acid as it cures), and the smell has been catching me ever since, but I am the only one in the house that can smell it, let alone be bothered by it. :dunno:

Maybe have a word with the GP perhaps, but from my own experience, all this can happen if you're run down and/or wound up and stressed.

I had a bit of a meltdown a few months back, and at its worst my senses were so heightened that every tiny little thing seemed immensely noticeable and annoying to me.

I know for a fact that I am run-down; too much on at work besides anything else. I have been off this week though, so am slowly catching up on myself - so far its been gutting the house (winter 'spring' cleaning if you will) and mending stuff that has broken (and the odd thing that I have inadvertently busted along the way - oven door :oopss:)

The weekend is going to be now't more than food, alcohol, TV and sleep.

You need to make time to chill properly.

I'm going to attempt to be alcohol free this weekend. It will be interesting to see how that goes.

I gave up the fags years ago, so a few jars is my only treat really (well, beside chocolate occasionally); I usually only have alcohol free weekends when I am working (often) or if I am ill (not often).

Check the paperwork for any medication you're on FC. I don't know about the tomato thing but a lot of medicines can give you the asthma/hayfever type symptoms.

Good point, well put - I never even considered those as I have been on them for almost a year.

I'll dig out the boxes in the morning and have a look :)

I once got properly ill, and one of the effects was an inflamed liver. I was prescribed medication for it which made me worse, so I read the leaflet, which listed among the possible side effects, you guessed it, inflammation of the liver.

You're right Clueless, a high percentage of medicines can give you the symptoms as well as take them away.
