    Hi all,

were on the move again (i think? :rolleyespink:) probably to a ground floor flat and so I'm a bit worried about one of the bedroom windows to the property as it faces right onto a path and I tend to like having my window open at night and also will have my computer and other valuable items in there and so I was looking into buying something like this:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SECURITY-...965?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4cff92a495

it's only a small window but the whole thing opens outwards and I could quite easily jimmy it open and get in and out in under a minute:frown: what I basically want to know is if anyone has seen these in practice or know if they actually work? or are they just more of a deterrent?

    many thanks:blue thumb:

It looks like a good and secure idea Aesculus. The only thing that would worry me is, things could be dropped throught the window in passing and who knows what, when you're sleeping and unaware of what it is. You could have a rude awakening.

The last firm I worked for used something similar on their ground floor windows, Aesculus. They were fitted on the inside of the windows, not the outside, and seemed pretty secure. Having said that, nothing deters a determined attempt but it is a good deterrent!!

I have seen them in use, they seem to do the job, the tracks should be kept clean to make opening / closing easier.
One thing though, places that have them do see, to have them on all windows on the same floor.

Thanks Sheal I'm not too worried about things being put through it's more just to put off any opportunist goit :blue thumb: the area isn't too bad but a nice wide window which opens all the way with a PC and TV on the other side might be too much for some people to resist:mute:

Well the flat only has the one window which opens all the way and would be easy to get into it's mostly just so that if the window is open then nobody can get in (or anything out...)

I think they work pretty well, Aesculus. Most burglars are opportunists and they're not going to take on a security grille when there is an easier way in somewhere down the road. My sister-in-law lives in a rough-ish bit of London. When she bought her house, there was a large grille over the French windows. She removed it, because she thought it was ugly. They immediately had four burglaries in a row! Personally I think I'd have put up with the grille.

Moving again! You must spend half your life packing/unpacking, ever thought about a caravan or houseboat :)

Sorry no experience of those grilles.

:) It's an oldun, John. I think the original was a piece of dyslexic graffiti which said something like 'I like grils'. Someone crossed out 'grils' and wrote 'girls'. Then another line appeared, saying: 'what's wrong with us grils?'

Reminds me of a kid at school, years ago, he carefully picked out stud lettering on the back of his jacket "Hells Angles" - it wasn't intentional :)

A rather dim history teacher at my school once wrote the following, concerning Joan of Arc: 'for many knights, she slept in full armour'. And I thought she was a nice gril.
