My wife's laptop still runs on Windows 8.

Mine can't be upgraded from 10 to 11 but works perfectly well. I have no plans to buy a new laptop just to keep Micro$oft coffers full.

I had an antivirus a few years ago, but still ended up with a virus.
Never bothered since, I'm not convinced they do anything other than mess things up.

Always wonder where the viruses come from, the cynic in me suggests its probably the anti virus providers, just keeping themselves in work.

The problem with anti virus software is that they use blacklists, I.e. they wait till a new the virus appears and then they develop a fix and update the blacklist. That means some will get infected.

A better and free solution is to use a Whitelist, you create a list of applications that are allowed to run. If anything new comes along it will be blocked.

My laptop picked up a particularly nasty virus about 18 months ago. My son's technological ability wasn't enough so he consulted the IT department of the company he works for. It took them a week to work out how to deal with it and past the info to my son.

As far as we have read thats only an option for the EU and does not apply to the UK, perhaps worth others here in the UK trying to see if they can get it for free like you did ?

Also worth a listen to this regular ytuber who suggest good practice is all you need.

Thanks for that @ricky101 - all makes sense and echoes what I was thinking anyway.

Just been onto my 'Windows Update' page and it now shows this message so hopefully this option is still available for others:

Just a thought. With Windows 12 said to be on the 'production line' it really wouldn't make sense to change computers or update to Windows 11 at this point. Unless it's absolutely necessary of course.

                Two problems there @Sheal .

First not every one wants, needs to or can afford to upgrade their perfectly good PC running W10.

Even if you have a PC running W11, its still unclear what, if any, extra hardware will be needed to run W12.
It sounds like W12 may be a dual system, in that it may run on an existing W11 machine but to get the full AI expereince you will need a PC with a NPU / Co-Processor.

There are a few of these AI machines on the market already from the big boys like Dell and HP.

I don't want or need AI and I'm probably not the only one. I hope we get the choice to have/or not, when W12 emerges. Have you any idea when W12 is likely to be released?

I read an article yesterday about the stress that AI is putting on Scottish water, in that it is already at a stage where it is using 13.5 million litres of water per year for cooling and that figure is growing. That is just water directly used too, and won't take into account the water used by the power generation nor indeed does it take into account the power itself.

Scottish data centres powering AI already using enough water to fill 27 million bottles a year

But hey, us driving our car ten miles to work is the problem....

                      That's an interesting read FC.

So is using water for our gardens it would seem. Could there be a connection to the typical hosepipe bans every year? Take it from us because of over use by AI?

Well AI has been around for as long as PCs, just that their latest complex programs are now able to run better on more the smaller modern PCs etc and its a great Buzz word for them to push new software and hardware.

You may not want it but its always going to be there, its just a case of if you want to embrace AI fully then you will need the latest hardware and software.

                      Google AI says -
Therefore, there is no reliable information to confirm when or if Windows 12 will be released, with speculation pointing toward a potential release in 2026 or 2027

Probably sticking with W10 and following some of the above advice is what we would do, though perhaps your Son can can get some better advice from his IT dept ?

There is no doubt that the weather has changed over the years, but it is not as dramatic a change as some of the headless chickens would have us believe.... but, when we think about it, the population of the UK has gone up by somewhere int he region of 20 million in the past twenty or so years, yet we've actually closed/decommissioned reservoirs, not built any new ones. Meanwhile, we've got increases in tech like AI and data centres that are hungry for water for cooling - - plus, they require power to be generated and that in turn invariably requires even more water to cool the power stations down, or to make steam to turn the turbines.

We don't build infrastructure to meet the requirements in this country, we merely fail to keep up and then try to either shame or tax people to stop them using the infrastructure.
