Good Morning Woo, this thread has been very interesting, my laptop up-dates whether I like it or not!!

I was worried about Windows 10 as when it last updated to Windows 8.1 it took out my touch pad and now I have to use a wireless mouse which can be frustrating when you want to work in different places. I've had a lot of 'popup' alerts asking me to update now to Windows 10. Think I'll back up everything on my storage unit before updating and give it a go :dbgrtmb:

Kirk was non PC and his voice always said "Where no man has gone before" from 1966.

When it became the Second Generation in 1987 it changed to "Where no one has gone before".

I am afraid Woo, I have to disagree. I have just started using W10 and, to me, its worse than Windows 8. I would go back to W8 if I could, and I hated that.

After a while Windows 8 was just acceptable as long as you removed all the crapware and used the Classic Shell. Windows 10 is no better. It does have the start button again, but I had that anyway with W8 + Classic. The Classic skin does work with W10, but Internet Explorer has been replaced by Windows Edge, which I find is awful. The good thing about the Classic skin is that it changed IE as well. But it doesn't have any effect of Edge.

Edge has no text menus now, and no way of knowing where the settings are. I took almost half an hour to change my home page from Bing, with its 50 newsfeed tiles that I couldn't get rid of, to Google. The process was totally unintuitive and I spent a long time on the internet Googling how to do it, only to find it almost impossible to translate their instructions to Edge itself.

Before I put Classic Shell on, I had two Start buttons, which showed slightly different items. Both were filled with crapware tiles. I removed all the rubbish, but there was no way I could remove the games tiles, which were all saying "install me".

There were loads of little irritations.
                        1) You can't have a plain desktop background. They don't give you that facility. A friend suggested I took a picture of a blank wall in my house and used the picture of that. Not friendly.
                        2) Numerous times the message "tap to choose what you want doing with this program" came up.
                        3) When I chose an option of "run", when installing software, it did run the program in another page, but it was hidden behind others. It didn't go to the page just opened. I was caught out by this in Windows 8. I was waiting 15 minutes at one point for a program to run, only to find it was running and waiting for an input in a page that was hidden.

Apart from the return of the Start screen, which I had anyway with the excellent Classic Shell, I feel Microsoft haven't learned anything.

I can't comment on the speed, as I have just bought a new and much faster machine that came with W10. So things are faster anyway.

I would prefer to go back to Windows 8 if I could.

Hi @PeterS No worry's my friend I have none of those problems you mentioned but its a personal choice, I have used windows 10 on and off since February so that I could really test it and see if it was for me and I found that it was, but in any case I can still go back to windows 8 if I feel the need to:smile:

I think things get better when you get used to them. And I have no doubt that the programs themselves like Excel and Word work perfectly well.

W10, like W8 appears to be written for children to use on a mobile phone or an ipad - but not on a desktop. The problem started in W8 I understand. Why have the menus in the browser gone, to be replaced by hieroglyphs. And where are all the browser settings. Its a nightmare to find things.

I have just played Freecell. Even that has been ruined. There is no score and the cards now do what they want not what you want. And the help is all about advertising.

Tried it. Don't like it. It wouldn't work with my Canon printer
Have reverted back to 8.1 (which I don't particularly like either .....)

I was talking to my son about Windows 10 today @PeterS and he found it a lot easier to find his way around using Cortana. However, he said voice contact with her is very hit and miss as she doesn't always respond. He reverted to keyboard contact with her and that was fine. :)
