young apple tree losing buds

hi everyone, i have an apple tree i put in about three years ago. it had loads of buds but then after they had blossomed they dried up and fell off, the leaves have gone yellow/brown and are dropping too. a friend says this is just the tree establishing itself. do any of you have clue whats happening and what i should do?
