Compost, Fertilisers & Recycling

Thanks to both of you. At least I am not alone. Perhaps I shouldn't have watered it occasionally, which might have kept the temperature down. Strange it's never happened before though until this year. We've had cold summers before! Thanks anyway.

Making the base rat proof is important as they like to burrow into them whatever you've got in there.A few previous threads:

With a very dry spring this year blacksmith earthworms have tended to go 'deep', I'm sure you have more than your share in your garden. They will show later in the year. I may be wrong, but I don't think you can buy earthworms.

They burn this stuff for energy!? Wow!

Thanks for the reply Ziggy... at the moment i was going to base the composter in a shingle planter but i guess the worms wont get through the base too easily so a different location might be in order many thanks John

You could try raised beds within and on top of your present soil.

I use B&Q compost the peat based one 3 for £10 good results alround .. I did get a couple of bags of the Westland peat free in the spring and had disasterous results...Never been a fan of peat free though .. Dave

No, don't use it to grow potatoes (or tomatoes) again. There will be a build up of bugs in the compost so you are better off buying some new. You can recycle you compost as a mulch around the garden or use it for growing radishes, lettuces etc

from what I remember miracle Grow is mostly Nitrogen, so it is best for leaves.Look at the NPK levels on the back of the packet. This is Nitrogen Potassium and Phosphorus (digs back to college memory..) Nitrogen is for leaves, phosphorus is for roots and potassium is for flowers and fruits...

this seems a bit like the "what oil do you use" threads on the motorbike forum I am on.....In the end I think it is down to personal preference. I tend to use whatever multipurpose I can find for my cuttings, in fact at the moment I have been potting things on with the left over ericaceous...

No mushrooms, but the supplier did say it was sterilised after use so I don't really expect any.
