Hi @Jiffy - I meant that they dyed the tablets to indicate different contents - not the actual colour of the original fertiliser.

Water was my original idea too but thermodynamically water takes a lot more heat to warm up, as we know from the power requirements from a kettle! I suspected water wouldnt heat up enough for convection to occure. Air seems to work very well, although it will be dependent on outside temperatures...

See if you can give it some mulch too. Maintain the top of the soil moist as the tiny, fibrous hydrangea roots are usually somewhere in the top 10cms.

Yes, put their efforts into leaf, not flowers. I use tomato fertilizer for flowers and soluble high nitrogen stuff (phostrogen, miracle grow, etc.,) for leafy stuff like lettuce to avoid bits of chicken poo pellets getting stuck between the leaves.

If it's just leaves then fine, but if they have seed heads attached no - unless you want them sprouting everywhere when you eventually use the compost.
