If you can find a local mushroom farm you could buy direct..our local mushroom farm even delivers.Commercial farms usually get about 3 flushes of mushrooms from the compost.. then they have to start over..thats a lot of compost to get rid of

Interesting looking at the UK's waste disposal statistics. (See Wasteonline)Of what we throw away - Garden waste = 21%. But if you add kitchen waste and "soil etc" it adds up to 41%. If some of the 18% "paper and board" (paper is organic) is added we could be nearer 50% of household waste...

Happily chomping on pastiscio nuts this evening together with some wine! And just wondered whether the shells could be composted or whether they would best be used for a mulch?Stingo

Forget the waste disposal Sharon! Get the stuff in the compost bins. Why throw it away when you can use it to make things grow better? We've two bins and two heaps and really get a kick out of what we return to the soil.Get an even bigger kick out of what we take out of it though. :D

Ohhh! don't bin it, sieve it! You'll get all the root out in one go and even if tiny pieces do get through they are easily dealt with if you let it rest a few weeks then re-sieve before putting on your garden. I always sieve compost and don't get any problems.

Well Went to buy some today from Focus and apparantly they are not selling them now because of bird flu!! I will have to try a few more places.

Take note though Sawfish that hellebore seed is poisonous, so be careful when handling. If you do wear protective gloves or if using bare hands don't lick your fingers afterwardsKandy

First of all the slugs are doing a job turning the material into compost. Slug eggs are quite easy to see, small round clear balls about 2 to3 mm across. The ants are more of a problem, I would sprinkle some ant killer on the heap and see if that wiped them out.

Well sea weed has a good write up so i will be colleting some this week end i guess after what all of you have said ie (wish you could get lots of it) and (the write up bit) it must be good for the soil so we will give it a try.

Cover it with an old rug or bit of carpet and it will help prevent evaporation.

Thanks Kandyfloss, I just looked and its a very good site. I have just got a new compost bin and have only this week turned out the old one into the new one to get some air in it.
