Maybe your compost is too dry? Try watering it every now and again - I've read it should be like a moist sponge, and that's not comfortable for rodents.

I agree with @Thevictorian in that the needles won't absorb moisture to any extent because of their nature. Pine cones don't really break down much either, or certainly not quickly. We also don't know the overall size of the other tree, and whether it was actively planted as opposed to one...

Agree, you cant prove it one way or another, personally, and they know that, for me rooting powder stopped working when they took the fungicide out of it and we went all organic.

I always have yeast as I occasionally get the urge to make bread. I've even got some molasses and usually have honey. Too late this year but I definitely need a better tomato crop next year.

It was just a point of interest. If I was really worried about it I would have added the water whilst I was turning the material. The new heap is more likely to get rained on than the original. It is only a few feet further along the garden, but not as overhung with trees.

If the alternatives were of sufficient quality to do the job I would also be in favour of reducing peat but everything I have tested so far gets nowhere near the same result. It may be a closer result if I had time to molly coddle the plants but there never is sufficient time.So I shall...
