Did you check the compost in the pot for grubs? Acers in pots are very vulnerable to vine weevil grubs over the winter. They eat the roots. The Acer appears to be growing in the spring, but then starts to wilt as the reduced root mass is unable to sustain the new foliage. No cure, as the roots...

Well sorry, but if I didn't mow, I'd get lost in the resulting herbage, and so would the cats! Plus ticks, snakes and harvest mites proliferate in long grass here, so all in all, not a practical idea at all!

Be carefull not to get the paving blocks to hot as some of them can go bang/explode with bits that can fly and if you are near hit you

Agree I love them too and have them in one area.You could try smothering them with whatever you have... cardboard,tarp,newspapers..anything that can be firmly held down. A tad unsightly imo but it works well , best time to cover is now when they are actively growing. Good luck.

That's good if its working, maybe good to give it a soak once a week for a while even if it rains, as long as you dont see standing water it should be ok.

Thanks, I had to pop into sainsbury's this morning and they actually had some new plants there so I bought two Gaillardias and two Coreopsis on the two for £5.00 offer. They did have rhododendrons for £10.00 but I've heard they can be quite difficult to grow so I left that!
