Love Digitalis! Yes easy to grow from seed just scattered, but only 'common' species as the less well known need more care for me! Also when you buy these seeds you get enough for small tray/pot. However last year's batch thin on the ground! Why I wonder??

I agree with your gardener. If done now the wounds heal before winter frosts. Give it a feed in spring and new growth comes. Btw when hard pruning do the top then the side next year and the other side the next year. Keeps the hedge strong.

Maybe Silene dioica would do the job. It grows well here( maybe a bit too well at times) good flowering season. Another with a long season is Geranium rozanne
