I always have a good metal rake near by, and make sure there is a good bare circle of soil around the pile and sometime I will run my hose near it. BBQ fluid is a good starter for it. but if its really dry, just some paper and a match works just fine.

With mine, I wait until they show signs of growth and then prune them depending on where the shoots are coming from. I remove anything that is non shooting, spindly, or growing in the wrong direction. I reduce the height by cutting back to a strongly growing bud/shoot.

Thanks for the reminder the little gardening shop I used to get shallot sets from has closed ( building luxury retirement apartments on the site". This year will plant saved shallots and maybe go with seed next year.

It’s a good idea to water your lawn thoroughly once you have applied Gypsum as it works by being absorbed into the soil , not on the grass surface. ( Or you could apply it after aerating and it will travel down the aeration holes ) .
