Future reference, I've germinated l. hidcote in coarse sand before, no compost just sand. they turned out to be the most successful lavender I've done. it could be I have exceptionally green fingers....or just they need extremely sharp drainage

Welcome to GC but I'm sorry I can't give you any good news. As the others have said, the roots spread a long way and are shallow. They are lovely trees but can be a problem. We had two of them, well away from the house and patio. One of them, 60ft high, came down during the hurricane of 1987...

@Upsydaisy I once made a smelly fertilizer from rhubarb leaves, not again.

These two remain upright and don't grow any higher than in the picture. Photo taken in January.

Last year I used a kit for growing oyster mushrooms on straw. It worked, but the crop was only a few at a time, not enough for even a decent side portion. Then you had to wait too long for the next batch so you couldn't combine them. Not worth it imho.
