I have a very large one in the front garden - in it's 3rd year now and thriving. I've also grown it in other parts of the garden without much trouble and find it self seeds happily if not dead headed.

Thank you for your comments, much appreciated.Evergreen is an organic plant and soil fertiliser specifically for evergreen plants and is the only one currently licenced by the RHS. It contains seaweed & mycorrhizal fungi +plus much more. Worth having a look.

Harebells will certainly seed around well. One of my favourites, but if that turns out to be willowherb - good luck getting rid of it! I loathe the thing, and it's very, very vigorous if it likes the spot. I also dislike the cultivated purple Lythrum because it looks too much like it!

An evergreen, dome shaped grass like Cortaderia selloana pumila (dwarf pampas grass) would provide a focal point below the trees and cover the border, without providing too much competition. This one in my garden is ten years old.
