Thank you all so much for replying. I'm so relieved, I thought I had an infestation of some kind. Nigel J thanks for all the info, I'm glad I don't live in Mexico though as they eat them.

I find scrunching the horsetail a bit before spraying it helps. I imagine using sandpaper would be even more effective as it would open the surface up more.

If you cut the flowers off lupins they often flower again later. Not quite such large flowers, but a second crop.

I just water the tray if I get the gnats, they don't like the top layer being dry.
