Well, well, well....

Being a cynical so-and-so, my guess is that the real reason is that they don't want the responsibility of people being taken ill during a flight (or going into labour) possibly requiring them to divert the fight to get medical attention which causes all kinds of knock-on chaos and costs them...

It's cheaper for the two of us to have fish and chips at our local pub than to buy it at the chippie. 2 fish and 1 portion of chips is £18 at the chippie and about £12 at the pub. It's certainly not the cheap meal it once was.
