What is a good price to have a hedge pruned by a professional?

We have just moved into our new garden (which comes with a house in the middle) and I have been looking at the privet hedge. It's healthy and nice, but needs a good shaping and with all the other things to do, I have asked for quotes to get it in shape by a professional.

So far the quotes are around £100, the hedge is 15m long and chest high.

Does this sound reasonable? How much have you paid for jobs such as hedge trimming, moving overgrown lawn etc?

I will be able to keep things up come next summer, but at the moment paying to get some of the work done sounds like a good idea to give me time to focus on other bits that come with moving a house.

I pay about £60 to have a hedge trimmed . Its about 12m long and 3m high . But they only trim one side the ends and the top.

 

Quotes are really hard as it really depends on the area and the company.
Around here i would charge you and this is a rough quote but it would be around 150 to cut and remove waste.

As an unexpected bonus my teenager heard the price and is now planning to offer her services next summer for £50 a go. The results might be disastrous and I'll have to count her fingers before handing over the power trimmer, but earning serious money for serious work at home is not a bad idea. And she's not into violin playing anyways.

 

Selleri , meant to get back on this one . The guy who cuts my conifers charges me mate rates I think , so £60 may be on the low side. We bought the house off him and he is a good friend of Mrs H's daughter.

 

@Selleri , the chap who cuts our hedges has his grandson helping him. The boy is now 18 and skilled enough to do it himself. I guess it comes with practice. I wouldn't attempt to do it myself. I wouldn't know straight if it hit me in the face.

My gardener puts a tarpaulin down to catch the clippings. Then goes over them with the lawnmower to shred them. They will then go in my green bin - just ! It weighs a tonne but the council will take it.

Without a picture we can't comment. How much is coming off? You say it needs a good shape... does that mean a lot of reduction and cutting into thick stems? Chunky loads of waste to remove.

Typical privet hedges 4-7ft high and not unusually deep, around 15m I'd probably charge £40-60 to trim one side and the top and it'd probably take me 40 minutes including clearup. Waste would be on top of this.

 

Interesting thread as it shows in a basic way the differances in quotes depending on where you are based.
I’m in the south east posh part I guess you would say as I’m pushing near £50 an hour and some are more with a few less but those are shrinking each year.

 

£1/min for on-job time is about right, lawns or hedges.

 

My lawns tend to be £1.50 to £2.50 per min for cuts only and waste charge on top if removed.
I tend to keep to £50 per hour if its one customer for a day. No travel time, just there and home. Its when an hourly rate comes in handy.
Trouble with cuts is travel time between jobs, total pain as traffic is crazy round here at times so I cover that with a higher cut cost.

 

Working solo? I have a variety, but £50/hr is what I see all day on average 8-4

 

A reshape of a privet hedge in my opinion depending on how much is coming off ( going in to the wood ) would be better done in March on wards.

I'll get laughed at and get told to get lost ( nicest way to put it ) at £50per hour no matter how good of a gardener you are. I doubt you would get over £20 an hour here, fixed price jobs work out better.

Its not a wealthy area here though, quite a few nice properties here and there. Manchester about 20 mile away, lots of new builds to accommodate more people living here and working in Manchester but like most new builds the gardens are small.
