Going through some photos the other day, and found these.... DSC00246.JPG DSC00245.JPG DSC00243.JPG
Mum decided that the lawn was boring, so she took a kitchen knife and a kneeler, and over the course of several weeks carving and planting came up with this design. The remaining grass pathways were the same width as her little mower.
The old apple tree was just used as a frame for the clematis that covered it - she called her garden her ''little bit of heaven''

I know just what she meant.

Wow! What an INCREDIBLE amount of work! Not just to create, but also to maintain looking as good as that. Your mum was very talented, with a great eye for design. I wonder if she was up and down the stairs looking at her work from above to check dimensions and pattern? She was right about it being a little piece of heaven :wow:

That wasn`t the end of it. There was an almighty storm, and it brought down the apple tree. Mum was distraught. My husband was still alive then, and we managed to remove the tree - in bits, and bring it back here for the gun pit where we burnt our bonfires.
Within weeks, mum sorted out a new plan, involving taller plants. She became especially fond of Crocosmia Lucifer (must have been the devil in her)...
I really must try and find some more pics ...

              Please do :dbgrtmb:!

My mum was a chaotic kind of gardener. She just shoved things in wherever she thought they should go, and it really worked. When I was a child, and growing up, our garden had a kind of disorganised beauty and people would stop to compliment her when they were passing. She is also able to create the most beautiful flower arrangements, with no formal training at all. I am not at all like her and do not have the eye, or imagination, to create as she could. I can also stick three daffodils in a vase and somehow manage to make them look bad .

It’s very unlikely that I have any pictures of my childhood garden. The lawn was fairly long and surrounded by beds. My Dad used to maintain it. When he died, my mum broke the beds down into small sections and let the grass grow between them. It was easier to maintain them that way.
