We are all so different and thank goodness for it but... I love variegation. "Flamingo trees", whether acer or salix and I have both are superb. :)
Eunymous, jasmine, knautia, osteospermum, gaura, phlox, pittosporum, buxus, cornus, ilex, phormium, grasses, astrantia, taxus, pelargonium, arabis, aubretia, agapanthus, galega, canna, aeonium, echiveria, felicia, to name many of the variegated versions of plants I have here. Love 'em!

Re a pot for salix flamingo, well they grow fine in pots but the pot needs weight, the compost needs to be weighty (john innes) and it needs to be at least as wide at the base as at the top. Then it makes a real eye catcher evoking complimentary remarks from most everybody

Check out local nurseries for agapanthus. Cheap roots in polythene bags will take a few years to make an impact; think of the time wasted, and time is precious and the work involved too. Spend a bit more and buy a potted plant and enjoy it for this year; in summer you can see the flower colour too.

Sorry again Gail, I think we're worlds apart in our thinking here. The idea of living rurally is to discard with neighbours, so I won't be hunting them. I've lived on estates in the past and was reared in the countryside, for me there's no comparison. I enjoy the peace and being at one with nature. Can you imagine what it's like to stand on the back door step and all you can here is birds singing and water running in the distance? It's paradise for me! :)

But if you're worried that I may be too alone you needn't. :) Look back at the picture and the copse of trees to the right of my bungalow. That copse is my neighbour's back garden and they have a cottage there which you can't see.

@Sheal when you mentioned you could see your neighbours better on that pic...when I said go hunting I meant check the distance, as I know you love your piece and quiet as you've stated...sorry I was joking so it cross weird we :)

That's wonderful to me as I love piece and quiet...mind you I never see nobody here although we have other properties by we. :)

Wow Sheal. Lovely. I'm a seaside guy, can smell the sea from here and love it but I could enjoy the situation you have :)

My current aspiration is to get my wildlife pond to actually looking like a pond and not like a large, green, plastic dog basket filled with water. Hubby, with his sudden new found interest in water gardening, has been looking at pond pictures. They are very nice pictures too ..... but the ponds are liner ponds. He is convinced that doesn't matter and that the same look can be duplicated. I think I ( and it will be me that does all the planting ) can plant things to create a similar look but it won't be exactly the same. I'm still contemplating this matter :snorky: :heehee:. Also contemplating another Bog garden.

This evening we watched Hugh's Wild West and now there's this little voice in my head that is saying why didn't you make a really big pond  :loll:

@Verdun I have a friend who lives in wales by the sea and she used to be down on the beach every morning with her two staffies and a large zoom canon camera...the shots she used to take was beautiful :)...she adored the beach.

@Sheal - there is a nice form that grows wild in a few places around here. It is a very pale yellow, dead subtle.

@luciusmaximus you could always look at different pic's like your hubbies been doing to give you rough ideas on the best look when planting :)

You did make me laugh when you said it was like a plastic dog bed :snorky:

Thanks Verdun. :) I've never lived further than eight miles from the sea and probably about 4 miles from it now. My last house was 250 yds from it.

Thank you Lucius. I think I'll have to start a separate thread so I don't hijack the other threads like this one.

That's what I'm after Longk! There are a couple already in my lawn but I'm yet to see them flower. If they are the natural ones I'll collect seed and grow them on.

If I remember I'll grab some seed too.

That's what it reminds me off. I have a smaller version that one of my rabbits uses. I have been looking at lots of pics. Trouble is there is too much choice :rolleyespink: . Plus, I already have some plants such as the grasses.

Here' s me thinking out loud again. Once all my spring plants have died off and my alliums have finished I will need to add summer and autumn interest. If I get around to rearranging my spring plants I will post a pic before moving on.

I am thinking of perennial bulbs as there is not a lot of space and I don't wish to disturb anything that's already there. I have just read up on wandflower and nerine as possibilities. Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated.

I guess should mention the rose bushes too.
