Not really a piece of music or song but these were the top selling singles for each year - in the UK.

They may not be the highest selling records over all but were the highest in each year. Some of the songs have had the sound removed by Universal Music Group :noidea:

This is a live performance of a song that almost made it as the best seller of the year.

It was the first record that Cliff made with his renamed backing group. They changed their name from The Drifters to The Shadows in 1959. It was also the first Cliff song not written by British songwriters as it was originally written for Elvis for his film King Creole.

This was the first hit for Cliff (with The Drifters) 1958.

          Nah!

This was the first hit for The Drifters in 1953.

British singers were mostly "copiests," in the fifties. Cliff was the worst. He even used Elvis's mannerisms.

But some were so ignorant of American R & B they even pinched the name of a group, until legally challenged and had to change it.

That's why they changed their name to The Shadows. :)

To be fair, Elvis did actually say he liked Cliff's singing :noidea: and he also said that he thought Billy Fury would do well (another performer in the style of Elvis).

Billy did do well but he had heart problems and died young. He was also a wildlife enthusiast.

            Elvis...Ever the gentleman.

Well....he'd hardly say he didn't like it would he? Not very good PR to do so. It's rare for pop stars to slag off each other, as they may share the same fans.
Sorry, each to their own, but back then when I was a teenager, I had little time for any of the British "copyists."

In my teens I worked for a few years for an insurance company. Across my desk once came the medical report and application for a re-insurance life policy, for a young man called Terence Nelhams-Wright.
My job was to flag up anything on the medical report which would need further investigation. But there was nothing.

That was Adam Faith's real name.

He wouldn't have needed to comment at all as they were free comments.

I'm reminded of an occurance in my teens.
As I, my future wife and friends woeked in the West-End we'd often walk into Soho after work.
I can remember us walking along Old Compton Street and we met another friend who was just coming out of the 2is coffee bar. Not one of our haunts. as we knew they had groups or singers in there, we asked him who was appearing there. He told us they had a singer, (we learned later it was Cliff) but he wasn't much good, but it would be better next week as they were getting Joe Brown.

I used to be friendly with both Cliff and Joe. In my opinion Cliff was a better singer than Joe - but everyone has their own opinion.

To a certain extent, the number of discs sold would give some indication.

Having had both inflicted upon me by my Mum I can confirm that they were both painful :heehee: I never understood the fuss about them when there was a godlike being in the shape of Roy Orbison about. As already said, each to their own.

Wel l there you go, I could never stand Roy Orbson.

                      I never rated his voice.

"Hands up" which is the best version?

                      .

                      Or the original.

This is just my own personal opinion,Roy Hamilton was a great Gospel singer but IMHO he wasn't in the same class as Roy Orbison

I just loved Roy Orbison and still do;)

Elvis Presley once called him the best singer in the world, just about everyone else who knew Roy Orbison would add that he was also the sweetest man in rock & roll. When he had his hits, he toured steadily. When his career faltered after personal tragedies and professional malaise, he kept on touring.
When he was a featured attraction at the Arizona State Fair, in Phoenix. While outside Veterans Memorial Coliseum families rode the Ferris wheel and gambled along the midway, inside Roy Orbison sang his hits. “Cover for me on any notes I don’t hit,” he said to his bass player backstage before the show, and the line got a big laugh; everybody in the room knew he’d hit every note of every song, and he did.
In the early Sixties, the anguished grandeur of those songs was rivaled only by the work of producer Phil Spector and his stable of girl groups. From the Beatles to Bruce Springsteen, young rockers and young dreamers were listening to the sound of Roy Orbison, the heartbreaking balladeer — and, on tunes like “Oh, Pretty Woman” and “Working for the Man,” Roy Orbison, the rocker.
In 1966 tragedy struck when Claudette Orbison was killed in a motorcycle accident, with Roy riding just ahead of her when it happened. He found it difficult to write any more songs, but he kept touring. Two years later, a fire destroyed his house in Hendersonville, Tennessee, killing two of his three children. From that point on, he refused to attend funerals.

He was the best without a doubt as a singer ,Songwriter and a Man:smile:

I have an autograph photograph of Roy Hamilton from the 60s. Must have seen him at The Coliseum in Huntsville, Alabama (no longer there).
