As most know I am a local council tenant and have lived here for over fifty years. Must be about fifteen years ago I asked for a new garden fence, seperating my garden from next doors. I have always been very much a DIY person. When we moved in, in 1964 the garden was a wilderness and dumping ground for others. Since then, the council send in staff to clear up before new tenants take over. For me. My old dad helped out, we cleard everything and dug a deep trench the width of the garden and buried it all deep, weeds etc, bedsteads etc etc. Even at this period in time. My garden was in places some two feet above next door.

At that time, seperating fences consisted of either wooden or concrete post with three strands of galvanised wire. Not wishing to endure future mini land-slips, I installed heavey type baulking and then seated a feather edge fence on top. Time took it's toll and the fence needed replacing. The council fencers turned up.. It was like Laurel & Hardy. Seems now that, not only were the concrete post removed but also the baulking. In place the new posts were very shallowly 'planted' no concrete and no baulking. Fair do's mulching and top-dressing etc perhaps the soil level has risen, but not to the extent etc to cause the fence to fall.

Now I have my daughter Amanda saying. Get onto the council. Dad! you are now eighty years old and sufferring from cancer. No way can you fix it. It has to be the councils responsibility. Friends. Mike is worried.

Most councils just employ the cheapest fencing company to do the job and specify the bare minimum.
Around here it seems to be chainlink on angle iron posts.

We had our rotten wooden fence replaced with chain link. Problem solved.
