Liatris Bulbs

Last year I planted a handful of liatris bulbs that I got a multipack of other bulbs from a Poundland type shop!

They were somewhat neglected but some sprouted up as small single stemmed plants.

This year i’ve bought some more in bulk...

Can I plant the bulbs a little more densely this spring? Or is it simply the case that you must follow the advice and let them mature over several years?

 

I tend to space as the instructions and wait for the bulbs to multiply and fill a space. As I have a lot of space to fill I will never have an instant garden due to the cost. If youre after immediate impact and are happy to thin out after a few years then plant closer together.

I would pot them up now and plant out in mid spring. Plant them as thick as you like.....you can reposition them again in autumn

 

Pot them up indoors to get a head start or will that just cause problems?

I don’t have a greenhouse... yet!!

Yes indoors is ok .....they will make growth sooner

 

Last year I bought thirty Liatris corms from Aldi for about 1.39 (sorry , the pound-symbol key on the computer has suddenly stopped working)!!???? .
Put ten each into three pots for the first year 'til I could find a place for them ; they flowered exceptionally well last Summer ; they are still in the pots .
My garden is so full I struggle to find space anymore .

 

Paul I spotted them in Aldi tonight!!!

I might do a walk of shame back to Dobbies with their bulbs as they worked out about 9 times the price!!!!

 

From this threads suggestion, I bought some Liatris bulbs on Ebay. They do look very nice. The Planting depth is stated as 6" . Is this correct for such small bulbs?

Yes 6 is correct , also the deeper depth helps as it supports the stem if you plant shallow they wil still grow but you may have to stake them

you get a lot of plant for such a small bulb so many varieties have a google at thsi one

bought some last year on a whim, was on sale at the food store. think there were 10 total, so just put them in. did see one bloom. maybe more this year. surprises are fun.
