Fish falling from the sky ?? !!

We had a humdinger of a thunder storm/rain etc last night, went on for quite a while including a lightening light show.
On the lawn this morning were these two fish. NO, they didn't escape from the pond as that is just Goldfish and newts. I assume that they were picked up by the freak weather from ????? and eventually fell to earth. They are virtually unmarked and fell right next to the pond. I am no fisherman so what are they and what weather conditions meant that they ended up on my lawn ?
And NO, I wasn't on any funny stuff last night

Have you put grass carp in your pond?

 

Yes but a big BUT.
About 18 months or so ago I put five Grass carp in. From that time to this I have NEVER, EVER seen one again. We are both retired and spend a fair time outside, grandchildren play etc but I have never seen those grass carp. It's not a huge pond, plenty of plant life in it, especially at this time of the year and even the Goldfish are hard to spot now but easy in the winter. If those on the lawn are Grass Carp then I just don't see how fish of that size could be in the pond and remain totally unseen for the entire time.
I remain mystified.

They can be tricky little devils to spot but I think you have found your answer. You could do with aeration in the pond as it’s probably oxygen levels during the last few days and the storm that caused them to jump about.

 

I had golden orfe in my pond many years ago, at the time I didn't realise they needed more oxygen than goldfish.
One hot humid night, when the water was warm and holds less oxygen, they all died, but not before jumping around and going crazy.
None of mine came out the pond but water was splashed everywhere.

Could this be something similar?

 

it is Pete, I’m not technical on it but it’s to do with the lack of oxygen and pressure.

 

The pond is aerated. There is a waterfall feature at one end that gives quite a splash, runs 24/7 and another pump sends a flow through a filter and then a mini Geneva style spout at the other end, again 24/7. I thought that this would be fine. I just don't see how we would never see fish that size !

Brian they act very much like tench, they will hide away and you may never see them.
On my fishery we have a huge aeration device called a splasher but they still suffer. The same when the water freezes over and gases build up.
Some fish are more at risk than others and carp show signs quickly as do pike.
A few winters back our system failed during a bad winter where we had a small pipe fail. we lost 25% of fish stock which was around 250k, some fisheries lost all their stock.
We looked for advice from the EA and now have the splasher fitted, cut back trees to increase wind movement on the water.
With high temps you find fish don’t fight so hard and again Carp and Barbel are at a greater risk if caught in these conditions.

 

Thanks. Looks like I will have to make sure the pumps are working at 100% to give a good flow and splash and pop a net over at night when it is really warm.

 

Probably spend the winter on the bottom and hidden by vegetation in the summer.

 

I use a pond air pump on occasion s like this.
It runs two air stones, the fish love it ,only turn them on at night.
