When my father was a young lad he regularly used to skate on the Thames in winter. He said it didn't freeze over right across but it froze half way towards the middle, from each side, in the middle of London.

Most historical records say it hasn't frozen over completely since the late 1800's but even I remember it freezing over in 1963. This was at Windsor

One thing I dont remember about the Winter of 62/63. That was, despite it being one of the worst Winters on record, schools closing. They seem to do that quite often today.

I'm predicting a very cold winter in Dec 20 or Jan 21 due to the present solar minimum.

I also hope I'm completely wrong because I've just bought a load of plants from Cornwall.

If I'm predicting a cold winter, why have I bought "tender" plants from Cornwall? Why do people do anything? No reasoning behind some people's actions, you know! :) :) :)

My last year in school and I remember trudging in the snow to school. I am sure it was knee deep, but I was only 4'8"!

I remember making slides in the school playground in 63, they were like glass, but nobody put salt on them, they lasted for weeks.

My prediction will be more extreme weather over the next few months in the form of various kinds of storms and temperatures.

@pete I remember something similar. On the last day of term before the Easter break we still had a slide in the schoolyard, and it was being well used. It had disappeared when we returned two weeks later.

I haven't watched more than the first five minutes so I only saw the bit about the 1963 winter (second bad one) :noidea:

I think the high speed trains in France started sometime around 1980.

I was working in South Africa during that winter. Left here on 10th December 1962 and the was a little snow just starting to fall. Arrived home in the thaw.

Sandy-the-Anorak thinks it might have been the Intercity 125 that was introduced in the good old UK in 1975 or 1976. Trusting to my rather poor memory, they had a Paxman V12 diesel engine that was a development of their Valenta V12...:)

I was just pointing out that the programme was not made in 1963;)

As to when we got high speed trains, Euro star, it was when the channel tunnel opened .
So I got the impression he was talking about a more recent winter, but like you I only watched 5 mins or so.

Comparisons were being made with 2009.

Winter of 62/63. I only had four days off from traffic patrol, on a Triumph Thunderbird. In some of the side streets of cental London, there was still snow on the ground at the begining of May 63.
