Thought I would add this show to this old thread, didn't realise it was available on YouTube in HD. The series that sparked my interest in pollinator-friendly gardening! Deserves rewatching and certainly worth watching if you've never seen it and are interested in the subject, I think. :) Can't believe it was originally broadcast 8 years ago, seems like yesterday!

I've been watching Monty Donn in his travels around America, I noted he was the only one wearing jacket and scarf on Miami beach last week, he really is a bit eccentric.:rolleyespink:

I enjoyed the series but wish they would spend just a little more time on the plants, they rarely mention them, and I think they got some wrong when they did, as with most of these programmes I find them a little bit too arty for my likings and not enough about the substance of the garden.

Plant names, that's what really annoys me about most gardening shows! :gaah: Sometimes they'll even only mention the genus and expect us to magically know what the species/cultivar name is! They also keep using common names, especially for an international broadcaster like the BBC it seems unprofessional! How hard is it to add a little caption at the bottom of the screen with the binomial name when showing a plant?

I thought the inclusion of the garden that seemed to have more sculpture than plants was just daft, sculpture thoughtfully used in a garden is great but I think it should complement the planting, not dominate it!

But I do like Monty's eccentricity and also his honesty, like when he admitted to knowing next to nothing about cacti, too many TV gardeners just come across as know-alls when they're clearly not, so I find his attitude refreshing. :)

Yep dont get me wrong I have come around a bit to Monty, must admit I didn't like him at first, but he is the newer kind of gardener who struggles if the reds are clashing with the purples;):yikes:.

But I'd actually like a programme that deals with plants, the way they fit in and most of all a bit of detail, not just gloss over the overall effect, and the artistic approach.

Montys garden has got to be the worst collection of plants I've ever seen, apart from mine, but I guess that is what it's all about really.
