Giant Onions 2020

Hope 2020 will award you with massive crops John.

Probably most gardeners, especially veg growers, have experienced those seasons when you given your very best. Then for what? Season too dry or too wet. Makes you want to give it all up. Next season we try again. It's in our blood. Failing that. We are all damned crazy.

@JWK I usually sow mine on Boxing Day but discovered that I didn't have any left and obviously I forgot to put "order Kelsae seeds" on my to do list! I ordered them via fax on Saturday and hopefully will have them in a few weeks. I'm still eating the ones from this past summer Yum! Hope yours do better next year

 

@JWK we grew them in our Hydroponics rail last year and they did great.

 

Got mine sown on January 10th and it's nice to still have a couple left from last year

 

I’m going to have my first attempt at growing onions this year. We’ve bought some “Stuttgart Giant” sets, and I will plant them tomorrow...
We had to buy them, really. During the week, although we have lots of supplies in, I realised that the only thing we can’t be self-sufficient in is onions. I’d commented on this with hubby on Friday night, then what should we see in Aldi’s today but a pack of 50 sets for just 0.99€.
What could possibly go wrong?!!

I bought some too, after planting about 50 seeds, it's going to be an onion overload at my house....fried onion breakfast, onion soup and onion gravy looking forward to harvest!

 

Wow @JWK yours are huge compared to mine but I will use the excuse that someone, a few years ago, told me to plant them out in early April. Even here in Canada. He said, "they are made of antifreeze". Stupid me because I did it again this year. Thank goodness I don't have any advice from that person anymore

A friendly allotment neighbour gave me my sets! I think i've had a case of beginners luck. Planted them out early March and this was them a couple weeks back. I'm trying to let them dry out before I pull them and dry them properly...however no such luck with the weather we are having at the mo!! ☔

 

That's a handsome crop of onions... Well done!

 

Thanks Jymi..definitely a case of beginners luck here! Looks like I'm going to be eating them for weeks. Better dig out the recipe books

 

Look like they are still growing to me, I'd leave well alone, you will know when they start to fall over that then they have pretty much finished growing.
Could go another month easily.

 

I can't wait for this day I'm waiting, patiently...or impatiently haha!
