One of our courgettes has suddenly grown so large that it weighed 7lb and could be very dangerous if dropped on someones head! :yikes:

I have been eating them for three weeks all ok.
I also read Thomson and Morgan had a batch as well.

I'd heard there was concerns with these seeds, but not just how serious the problem potentially is,.. question to our UK seed companies as to why they've not withdrawn them earlier in the light of problems in New Zealand and elsewhere..I guess they didn't know their seeds were a risk until customers emailed complaints. Thanks for this post.

Ha ha I was about to start a thread and then saw this!

my mum grew mr fothergills Courgettes and she was making a ratatouille. She tasted it before adding seasoning and she said it was so bitter and disgusting she spat it out. She then picked out a bit of courgette to try and she spat that out too. She said it felt like it burned a patch on her tongue with the bitter taste. The whole batch went in the bin....

...then she comes across a news article about the dodgy courgette seeds! She had to ring her friend (who had been given some of my mums courgettes) and tell her to chuck them.

Aha. That's why my zucchini didn't sprout properly this year. It knew I'd lambaste it! Yes, we do have fathergill seeds here too! Hmmm, now we have to watch out for the green menace! :heehee:

Frequently Asked Questions | Thompson & Morgan

"It has been identified that a small batch of courgette seed contained higher than normal levels of cucurbitacins, a compound that is present in all courgettes. This causes the courgettes to taste bitter and can cause sickness. This issue has been identified for the following variety: Courgette Zucchini with the following lot numbers on the back of the packet/foil: 296195, 297216, 295460, 297760, 298308, Grow Your Own Magazine Zucchini. We advise to taste test the courgettes prior to consuming them, and do not ingest if they taste in any way bitter"

Don't any seed suppliers produces their own seeds anymore? They must all get them from he same place.

Donald would say 'I eat my courgettes wearing a face mask, and it does a great job'
'All the governors eat courgettes and they are also doing a great job'.

Our PM would say, I just strain mine through my fancy socks and all the bitterness goes but if your are bitter, I apologize and if you are an aboriginal will send you millions of dollars in compensation...
