Begonia " Sutherlandii ". A neat little plant that looks good on its own. Over winters well in the mini GH and just needs repotting each Spring. Have had them for 8 years now and still it gives me pleasure. 20200729_154138.jpg

I used to have lots of them ,think there are a few tubers that are self sown in the cold frame.
Under rated plant that needs a come back.

Dahlia excelsa a recent acquisition, one of the tree dahlias, from Mexico, flowers earlier than D imperalis. Needs a cold greenhouse to overwinter; although I may try a chunk outside as D imperalis is growing well outside.

@pete D excelsa flowers from mid summer to first frost according to Hill House where I got it from at the beginning of June. First time I'd come across it. Apparently it doesn't get as tall as D imperalis 8 to 10ft. D imperalis flowers late autumn early winter. Like you I've had buds, but they have aborted. I have heard of it flowering at Christmas in Norfolk, also there may be two selections in the UK one flowering in November the other being later. I have one living outside since last summer came back well this spring although the slugs did have a go at it, taking out the leader, the foliage is good though. Back up in greenhouse just in case.
