    Could be an ornamental ginger (Curcuma).

      I'd go along with possible ginger of some kind.

        The leaves do look like my outdoor ginger plants, thinking of 'Tara'.

            Ginger, Cardamom and Tumeric leaves are similar and do have slightly aromatic leaves so it could be one of them but not usually sold or grown as a house plant

                  Thanks for the replies. My friend now remembers it is Curcuma. He saw it growing in Florida where it looked wonderful and decided to try it!
