        @Cuttings :dunno:

        "Can you get Durstons compost in your area?, its probably the best budget compost, or Violet farm, is ok, these 2 brands are Somerset based, and mixed on the levels around Glastonbury, so not sure if they are available near you, so would become expensive via mail order, in this area they will deliver bulk 1 tonne bags or palleted bales, maybe there is somewhere near you that does the same."

        I've done a lot of research over a long time trying to find a local or on-line reliable supplier of bulk Peat Added Compost and found none. I would not, though, even buy non peat added compost in bulk on line as there is more than a real danger of buying rubbish, and having several 1 ton bags of rubbish on my driveway is not something I relish.
        Also, a 1 ton sack is not exactly manoeurable and trying to get it into my garden storage area would be a real task. I can store and stack Verve 125litre bales easily in my Garage and in the side passage between the House and Garage. Moving a bale of compost with a Porters Trolley is far easier and convenient than digging into a 1 ton bulk sack and transporting it around in a Wheel Barrow.

          I understand @ARMANDII, I do not realise sometimes, other areas do not have the same access to a wide range of compost as we do here, with portbury and Avonmouth docks, where a large amount of Irish compost is shipped in and distributed from, and the peat bogs and compost manufacturers on the Somerset levels, where in a 4 mile radius there are 12 companies, that you can just pull in buy, but also stems from a vast disliking of large companies that are purveyors of mediocre tat, I would like to point out, that I am not a snob, but have also been involved and witnessed the results of compost trials, including chemical analysis, far longer than the which magazine tests. It is a good job you are improving the Verve compost, but do understand, with the reduction of available outlets, and the ever increasing prices of larger garden centres, some have limited choice.

                Has anyone bought and used Wickes 120 litre multi purpose compost this year please? I'd like to know what the quality is like. With the price having gone up again on B&Q's 125 litre Verve to £9.95 I'm thinking of switching to Wickes. I realise there's not much difference between their prices but I can click and collect from Wickes, whereas there is a delivery charge for B&Q.

                  Sorry, I haven't even attempted to try Wickes since the debacle the other year. I don't know of anyone who has but I don't chat to other local gardeners at the moment. :noidea:

                    This year I am sticking 100% with Jack's Magic. I don't use the industrial quantities of MPC that some other do on GC, so the higher cost is not a problem. During last years lockdown I had a random bag of compost delivered it was a Westland make. I am sure this caused a few problems, but who knows?
                    After the Wickes MPC episode of 3 years ago (?), where it looked like mattress stuffing, I would not risk it again. But it may be a new recipe now and be absolutely wonderful!

                      @HarryS you never can tell :noidea:

                      Westland made both the Wickes compost three years ago and Jack's Magic. I don't know whether they still make it for Wickes.

                        Things always get more complicated when you delve into things. So I am comparing Westland with Westland with Westland :wallbanging:

                            Where I go you can get Jack's magic, westland multi purpose and westland peat free.
                            I've tried all 3 and they are all very different to feel and in appearance .

                            So if wickes compost is made by westland I very much doubt that it is anything like any of the others that they make.

                              I bought 5 x 120L bags last month despite already having over 2,000L of other stuff, but only because I urgently needed some materals from Wickes which weren't available on click and collect and as I couldn't get my order anywhere near the £75 for free delivery I added 5 x £9 bags (5 is min order) and spent £45 to save £30 deliv charge.

                              If nobody else has purchased any I'll slit open a bag and have a look at it and re-seal it.

                              The serial numbers are all 20297 9CD, but this may or may not mean anything as I recall in previous years they kept on using bags with same batch numbers for numerous batches of varying quality.

                                I don't know whether Westland still make Wickes compost :dunno:. A quick look on the net didn't find it.

                                I know they made it three years ago because I kicked up a fuss about the Wickes compost and the Westland UK sales manager and Quality Control Director came to see me. :rolleyespink:
