Here's a picture taken just now of my sweet peas - the seeds from the front of a magazine and first time I've tried these 'jiffy' grow plugs.

Spring is near - the garden will come to our rescue against lock down blues :spinning::

Yes, me, Mazambo, in the long root trainers. They're on the long root trainers and doing reasonably well in a cool room. A similar sowing in the Green House succumbed to the cold.:dunno:

I think it's dangerous leaving the above post on Sweet Pea thread!

Although garden peas, (Pisum sativum) such as English peas, edible podded peas and snow peas are edible, sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus) are poisonous - especially the flowers and seeds.

Well then I've been set up the speech barrier. In Germany we literally call them "Sugar Peas" so I just assumed you are talking about the broader family here. Although the pictures you posted above should've alerted me.

@clanless when you plant those out, please be sure to tear the mesh. I was shocked one year to dig up the spent annuals and found those little mesh bits around the soil, still intact! They stifled the growth of the plants and don't seem to disintegrate in any hurry. Great for starting but not aftermthat. I started using soil blocks to avoid that situation. :)

I won't be starting my sweet peas until next week, the 9th. I'm forcing myself not to jump ahead of the suggested sow date on the package.

Started these off in November, are they further forward than they should be? And can i start hardening them off if it isn't to cold? I've had no where else to put them other than in the greenhouse which is heated for my brugs not been below 6.2°c. 20210217_104547.jpg

hello anyone? I've the same question as mazambo...sweet peas that have been in a heated greenhouse getting quite big. should I transfer them to a cold frame or do I need to be doing the hardening off stage and bringing them out and putting them back in at night routine?

I don't think either are too far on: mine were started in root trainers in the cold greenhouse last November, end of February we had a a week or two of dry, bright, calm weather so they got turfed out during the day and back in at night after two or three days of this we had a couple of warmer nights and they got left out overnight and have been outside ever since. Anyway these are further on than either of @Snorky85 or @mazambo 's. I pinched the tips out of mine when they were the same size as Mazambo's. Mine will get planted out the next time we have some decent weather.
Definitely harden them off and I think Snorky you would be better off putting them out and bringing them back in at night for at least a couple of days.
