WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2021

Cutting off the dead flower stalks on the lavender, nearly finished them.

 

Well I've recused 4 hydrangea macrophylla today , one of my clients wanted to bin them not on my watch , so I brought them home and planted two on the garage site next door in the very wet area / bog , I like to experiment with plants and this site is ideal to see how much water they can take .

I took another hydrangea round to my mum and planted it , pruned some roses for her and had a quick titivate round tiding various things up.

Got stuck into some weeding when I got home , you know the ground warming up when the weeds are growing .

My snowdrops have got going now I've got more than I thought but not nearly as many double ones I planted a couple of years ago.

 

Weather forecast ( checked yesterday ) said cloudy with sunny spells today. It was incorrect, actually beautiful warm, spring like day with lots of . Had a walk in the beach and then went out into the garden.

I was a little tired after the walk and would very much have liked to just sit in the sun with coffee and biscuits and not do any gardening at all. But, told myself not to be lazy and do something. Moved a ceramic pot with a yellow Scabious in to a better position by one of the baths. After wandering around trying to decide what else to do decided to get the hand shears and start chopping at some very long, thick grass and brambles. Took me around an hour and a half to cut approximately an area 10 metres long x 1 metre wide. Got stabbed numerous times by the brambles. Not in the best of moods when I finished. Still a lot more to do on that area, too. Spent a few minutes watching the pond snails and looking at the pond. Most of my pond plants have been invaded by grass and clover, so I guess I'll have to sort that out at some point. Murmuration of Starlings in field took off and flew over me. Amazing sounds taking off and passing overhead

 

I bought a new electric propagator today, a Garland one that has 4 small trays and high domed lids. I have 2 half trays that fit on it, so have sown 2 types of Marigolds and also sowed some Dahlia Tartan seeds.

Did a bit of weeding and divided a hardy geranium.

 

Got home from work at lunch time to bright blue sky and the auto vent opening the window in the green house.


I pottered in GH for a bit, but it was a bit warm. I have booked into the local tip next Friday so have cut up the conifer I cut back a couple of weekends ago, so that it will fit in the car. I have also shredded all the apple pruning sand put t he se in the chicken run in 3 big piles. The girls had great fun kicking it around and having a good rummage. I then spent the last half hour of light weeding the front border. I hit about 2 square meters done. Hopefully I can get back on it tomorrow.

Had a good afternoon in the garden. Worked on the sunny back border. Dug out a load of plants that had spread way too far, weeded it, pruned the contorted hazel back into shape, cleared the raised beds of weeds, planted up a couple of troughs with a couple of small evergreen shrubs.

 

Another day of , although a bit of a chill in the air as a slight breeze. Had a couple of hours in front garden. Gently combed through 4 ornamental grasses with the rake. Watched the pond snails for a couple of minutes and contemplated cleaning out the pond. Finished cutting the overgrown area with shears and then went over it with electric strimmer. Also started cutting paths back in across the garden. The wire ran out, indicating to me that it was time for a coffee break. Sat on bench and watched the birds, rats and lambs.

 

Spent the whole day, morning, lunch and afternoon in the garden. Weeded the bottom borders and moved and divided some plants.
Found it a bit more difficult today as I normally like to kneel down but there was no way my dodgy leg/ knee would allow that ,so ended up with a very stiff back instead.

Watered all the overwintering plants in the greenhouse and both coldframes. Tidied the plants up as I went ,removing wilted leaves and spent blooms.

Carried on digging up and re-homing clumps of Snowdrops.
