Dear gardeners, could you advise if there is anything we can do to get rid of this flowering grass to make it look more like a lawn. We rent a property where the lawn is in such condition. Even not sure if there is any proper lawn grass among it...

Looks like you have a nice collection of various plants growing nicely in there.
The problem is there’s not one herbicide out there that will kill it all off but you can make a dent in it.
you can try one of the domestic found lawn killers either by spraying or contained in a granular feed which are called weed and feeds.
The next option is to employ either one the the many lawn franchises or a local company who are able to do this for you using herbicides that are available to trained individuals.

 

Prettier than a lawn composed almost exclusively of grass IMO and far better for pollinating insects, @Yana! Looks like you have quite a bit of White Clover and Selfheal in there!

@Yana Unless you have a particular reason for a good lawn I would set the mower on the higher side and enjoy the flowers and the insects visiting them.

 

Personally i would kill the lot with glyso and re-start, but thats me…….for me a lawn is shortly mowed grass and not flowers and weeds…….birds, bees and insects can get enough from my flowere around the borders, fruit trees etc etc

 

I like it too.. this is my husband who thinks it is a mess. Hopefully, I will persuade him to leave it as it is

 

I think this is the best way, the only problem, we are renting and do not plan to stay here for a long time to invest a lot into this garden, so I was wondering if there is a magic spray that kills one type and does not affect other Thank you for confirmation

Thank you very much. We are just renting, so to hire somebody would not worth it, so will try mow more often. if does not works, the, as you advised, will try weed and feed

that’s quite an interesting question about a single herbicide. The reason for having several chemicals/herbicides in a mixture is to help against resistance. A single selective herbicide use over time means plants can became resilient to it so by having several together helps cut down that possibility.
It is possible to kill of some plants while leaving others but it depends greatly on the plant types and the chemical choice. Some plants can be targeted through the mixture rate but it’s not a guarantee.
Other plants like clover are susceptible to a wide choice of herbicides so it’s not easy to leave them and kill other plant types where self heal and speedwell are harder to target. Speedwell is a tough plant and the most common found garden weed and feeds don’t touch it but it hates iron which can be used at a high rate to effect it’s growth for example.
So it is possible to target plants but as above it depends on the type of plants and in some cases the chemical choice and mixture rate.

 

Personally, I prefer to see only grass in a lawn. No clover, wild flowers, or anything else that in my opinion should not be there. It is possible to get rid of most of the unwanted things by using what used to be called a hormonal weed killer. That was an unfortunate term, so I think they are now called Selective weed killers.

That would create a conflict for me though if I had to do it in my lawn for the simple reason I'm getting more and more opposed to using chemical lawn treatments of any kind, especially things such as Roundup that kills everything it touches.

 

I'd also mow short to get a nicer look for regular use, or if you can leave it to flower for the bees to enjoy. If you were going to be there longer and it was cooler and damper i'd even consider raking and re-sowing fresh grass but spring has passed now and seeding lawns in the summer needs a lot of water.
