Salvia (perennial variety)

Take off with Salvia coccinea 'Texas Sage' 'Scarlet Sage' sowed on the 15th ...

 

Love red Salvias Vicky I have this one ,which is a tender perennial but I over winter them OK.
So wish I didn't have to pick favourite plants that require over wintering.

 

That is lovely Upsy. Depending how many "grow up" of these, the plan is to plant them around the ballustrade as I had once before Still have the white one down near the gate now .. in April 2008 ...

 

Never realised Black n Blue was tuberous, like Patens, for example. Not seen any stolons either? Perhaps mine something else? Curiously it's growing next to Amistad, Hotlips (both fully hardy here) Thought I'd lost it but, as I said earlier, up it popped (lost labels!!!) Next in line is the half hardy Confertiflora which will be dug up very soon. Think that the Black n Blue will get the fork treatment so that I can do some micro propagation !!!

Black and Blue is a selected cultivar of S.guaranitica. Amistad is a hybrid that was found in the wild by Salvia collector Roland Uria and one of its parents is believed to be S.guaranitica.

Spring stolons (runners) seem to be the best way to propogate it in my experience. One 10cm runner can yield three or four plants.

 

My Black and Blue has now occupied a square 1 m *1 m. Since 2018 when it was knocked back to the ground, since that autumn it has been in leaf and flowering.

 

Will dig mine up next week and propagate it.
Having my heated conservatory flashing replaced as heavy rain floods it, but builders very slow to do it. Too much work!! Can't bring anything in til waterproof and crossing my fingers we don't get frost!!

 

We're getting near to digging-up and bringing-in time aren't we. I noticed I was saying the same thing on the 19th October last year!!! Wonder if the cold weather will follow same pattern as last Autumn???

 

This is Salvia greggii - 5th year. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Cut it back hard each March and it comes back like this every year,

@Jenny namaste I've had S microphylla "Kew Red" and S greggii "Raspberry Ripple" in a welldrained sunny spot for over 15 years now with no problems. Both need a good tidy up at the moment.
I have got another S greggii from seed that "Raspberry Ripple" set a few years ago in a different part of the garden and it grows far more exhuberantly.
