WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2022

Pruned fruit bushes and weeded.

 

Actually got out in the garden this morning , weather has been so ugly for weeks now,
and the paddy field ( lawn) is finally draining .
Did battle with the hawthorn hedge and gave it a good winter prune.
Just need to deal with the huge pile of brash.
That’s tomorrow’s job .

 

Got out to greenhouse and planted more of things I want to be ready as soon as the ground has warmed up a bit. Chard and broad beans this time. I've also ordered some seeds for a Citrus Hysterix - the kafir lime leaf plant. Who knows if they will germinate, but I see that plenty of people do grow this in the UK very successfully - under glass. It's such a great flavouring in cooking. Waitrose started selling fresh frozen some years ago and it was wonderful. Then they stopped. To have fresh available would just be wonderful. Let's see.

 

Tidied up a couple of borders that were looking a tad battle worn.
Re-staked some plants that were doing grand impressions of The Leaning Tower Of Pissa.
Bagged up some more leaves.....where do they all come from, the trees are bare and we've had no wind to speak of!!
Opened up the cold frames and removed any manky looking leaves from the Pelargoniums.
And lastly made an attempt ( feeble) to tidy up the greenhouse....yet again.

But they still have a long way to go, thankfully I have a huge roll of fleece!

I tend to find cuttings survive better and are a lot stronger it kept outside once their root systems are established. They were all rooted indoors back in September in water...then sent out to face the Winter in the Greenhouse..

 

Cleaned out and refilled the bird feeders.
I'm almost sure I can see a little sign of germination from the Eryngium silver ghost seeds. I'm trying again this year after a complete fail last year.

Today was in the workshop painting my coffee table/cold frame stand with Ronseal, prior to assembly. After that, I refilled the bird feeders and that was it. A bit chilly today.

 

Dealt with the mountain of hawthorn brash and managed to get several thorns imbedded in the fingers of my rigger gloves . They are vicious little blighters !

 

It's 9c and dry so i emptied one of the compost bins.

 

We started the day by going to a local garden centre and buying three large planters. On our return I planted 100 Puschkinia Libanotica "Russian Snowdrop" then I made a start to my sowing with Foxglove “Snowy Mountain” which I started in a propagator over a heat blanket.
After lunch, we took delivery of a Salix gracilistyla "Mount Aso" which we planted in our "large plant" border. The delights of being retired.

 

I've sowed some Puschkinia seeds a while back now, first time, so far nothing has happened.
