Yes @JimmyB it is very slow, the tomato seed I ordered on 1st Jan took a few days longer than normal to arrive, I only got them a couple of days ago. Other things including Amazon parcels have really slowed down too, lack of staff for deliveries, sorting I guess.

@JWK My instinctively grumpy reaction got a bid modified when I realised the poor posties are probably trying to operate with 30% of staff not there! Hard enough job at the best of times...

I can only sympathise. I'm wondering about how I'm going to cope in the spring too, I can't lift anything or dig at the moment and probably for a few months. No-dig wouldn't work as there is no way I could move and spread enough organic material even if I could afford it. I'm considering covering as much as possible with landscape fabric and planting through it. One thing I do have is lots of time so I can get stuff done albeit slowly, unlike you who have to work.

I know how you feel, I am getting to the point where I don't want to make or see another bag of compost ever again. Just having to crack on in the meantime, looking forward to moving to Thailand in the not too distant future.

I did give serious consideration to getting rid of the greenhouse and making that into a sort of barbecue area, with the rest of the garden set to shrubs and bark underneath, but it felt like a cop out to be honest.

Work is also an issue - our day starts at 5am and it is constant through to roughly 7pm by which time we are looking at dinner, showers and so on. Going out to water baskets and borders wears thin very, very quickly.

I feel more for you as I have never been more than a very amateur caretaker of a garden, you on the other hand are far more skilled.

At first I thought this was part of a quiz and I, for sure, did not know the answers. Such as "what it the generic name for?" Are these succulents?

I cannot find my order the I had faxed to a seed company and now I don't remember if I requested petunia seeds! If I didn't order them, I'd better get on with it because the only petunia seeds I have were collected from a plant gifted to me. And they're "okay" but not as nice as the ones pictured in the catalogues and they are not "wave" type.

                The hunt begins.

Only one of them is actually a succulent, one climber, one hardy tree and a tenderish shrub.

Cant see why you think that would be a cop out FC?
The garden is there to be enjoyed, if you are struggling with veg, then there is no fun in doing it.
Might as well just turn the garden into a place containing shrubs and perennials, especially stuff that attracts wildlife.
Then you can have your barbeque and sit out there and enjoy yourself without flogging yourself to death.:)

PS, you dont know anyone selling a greenhouse for cheap, do you?:roflol:

Thanks, but I'm not skilled just an over-enthusiastic random plant collector. I kind of knew my time would come sooner or later to go for a low maintenance garden or just stop completely. I never sit and relax in the garden, unless we have visitors which hasn't happened for 2 years. Sounds silly when I think about it.

I'm with Pete on this. Grow plants and flowers you can enjoy in a way that you have time to enjoy them.
The point of gardening (actually any hobby or pastime) is pleasure and relaxation.
If it is a chore you won't enjoy it.
So why not swop the greenhouse out for a patio area with a barbecue where you can sit around have a cup of tea or whatever. Put in plenty of colourful plants don't forget the scented ones especially the evening scented ones as that is when you might be out there most.
Don't worry about few weeds or things getting a bit overgrown deal with those when you have a bit of time and are in the mood for it.

That sums up my gardening quite nicely.

Oh no, if you don't need it for growing veg, it would be a great place to sit in on a cold day or when it is raining. I've seen people set up a small cafe table and a couple of chairs and use them as a mini tea house. :) On a cool sunny day, absolutely and blissfully shirt sleeve comfort. You and your pup might like sitting in there together too. Wear your sunglasses!

Oh, and they stop harmful UV rays too.

I quite like that idea! Little tap room for cooler days, you could dec it out with nic nacs and a few pot plants and ponder the years :)

Yup, even when we're in the deep freeze, the sun will heat up my greenhouses to around 70f :)
